Sunday mornings in July

Mindfulness Practice:  Basics and Beyond — What is mindfulness, as a daily practice and an aspect of the Buddhist path? We will discuss the roots of mindfulness, the ways to manifest it in ordinary activities, and the goals of a mindful life.

August

The Divine in Buddhism.  Some versions of Buddhism never mention god, but others are centered on devotion to divine beings. Some people combine Buddhist practices with a  belief in the Judeo- Christian God, others regard Buddhism as an alternative to Western faiths.  We will discuss “Living Buddha/Living Christ” by Thich Nhat Hanh, among other books.

September

Engaged Buddhism. We will read and discuss Thich Nhat Hanh’s book  “Calming the Fearful Mind: A Zen Response to Terrorism.”

October

Attachment and Non-attachment.  What does the central Buddhist doctrine of non-attachment mean? How does it differ from not caring or being disengaged? We will explore the dimensions of non-attachment in meditation practice and daily life.
