The Mindfulness Community of Milwaukee is a spiritual community dedicated to the creation of a mindful culture fostering lovingkindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. We study and practice teachings from Buddhism and other traditions in order to nurture individuals, families, society, and a healthy planet.

General practice schedule
 

*  Sunday mornings         10 – 11 am:  sitting and walking meditation
11 – 12 noon:  readings and discussion
* 5th Sunday: Tea ceremony and/or mindful cleaning practice at center
 

* 3rd Sunday:  The Hermit’s Well program for children, led by Paul Norton, Babara Ley, and Pat Holland.  Please bring the kids at 10 am for a two-hour on-site supervised program of games, songs, arts and crafts, stories, snacks, mindfulness exercises, and other activities
 

* Wednesday evenings,  7 – 8:30 pm: sitting and walking meditation, readings and discussion.
          1st and 3rd Wednesdays, 6 – 6:45 pm: Free drop-in meditation instruction.
 

* Mon and Wed mornings, 6:30 – 7 am: sitting and walking meditation
 

*  Yoga sessions:  Julianna and Ken Kipp (961-1787, www.yogaspace.us):

*   Thursday mornings, 7:30 – 9 am:  Spirit-Mind-Body Study Group of Columbia/St. Mary’s Hospital. Half-hour of meditation, presentation by group members, and discussion. All are welcome.
 

Sunday mornings in …
July:   Mindfulness and money.  Does our attachment to money and material security lead to unskillful actions and suffering?  Can mindfulness practice transform the way we deal with wealth, possessions, investments, personal richness and poverty?
August:  Going deeper with the Five Mindfulness Trainings.  We will read and discuss commentaries by Thich Nhat Hanh and Western Buddhist teachers about the Buddhist suggestions for a moral life.
September::  Basic meditation pracgices.  We will return to the core mindfulness practices of sitting and walking meditation, via a book from a British-based Mahayana Buddhist order.

Upcoming events and classes

New yoga class:  Sundays,  8:30 to 9:30 am,  Slow and gentle yoga for beginners and advanced beginners. This class focuses on joint mobility, including hip openers (perfect for meditation. Fee: $8 per class,  4 classes for $30.  Starts June 10 (no class on 24 June) Please wear loose fitting clothing (no jeans, no belts, etc.).  To register, call 961-1787
          Sunday, 1 July, 2007:  Quarterly business meeting of the Mindfulness Community of Milwaukee. Meditation from 9 to 10 am.  Meeting from 10 to 12 noon (at latest).

          Monday, 9 July, for 6 consecutive Mondays, 7:30 to 9 pm.  New class:  Christian Meditation Practice. Todd Davison MD will explore the ancient practices of centering prayer, Lectio Divina, chants, and icons as a Christian path of mindfulness.  Fee:  $50 for entire series, or $10 per class.  For more information, call 414-962-8678 or email milwmindful@hotmail.com
 

Saturday, 28 July, 2007:  Regional Day of Mindfulness, sponsored by the Mindfulness Community of Milwaukee at the DeKoven Center,  600 21st Street, Racine WI.  Led by Jack Lawlor, dharma teacher of the Thich Nhat Hanh sangha in Evanston. Flyers will be available at Center; please register early. Fee for retreat:  $25.  Fee for overnight stay on Friday night: $40.
 

Starting on Tuesday, 11 September  for 11 consecutive Thursdays, 6:30 to 8:30 pm:  Mindfulness in Everyday Life.  Paul Norton will teach mindfulness-based stress reduction and the first steps on the Budddhist path.  Open to new and experienced meditators, this course covers basic practices such as sitting and walking meditation and mindfulness in everyday life. $125 for the entire course, $15 for individual “drop-in” sessions, includes a book and two CDs of guided meditation.  Scholarships available.    
          Sunday, 16 September, 2007:  12 noon to 12:30   Meeting of the Practice Committee.  Stay after Sunday morning sangha to share your ideas about upcoming themes, classes, etc. at the Center.  The first agenda item is determining the themes for Sundays in October, November, and December. Inform Paul Brodwin of other agenda items before meeting.
 

          Upcoming in January 2008:  Buddhist approaches to death and dying, taught by Tom Kopka.  Information to come.
